cold moutain,
book by charles frazier.
inmen-jude law. did a good job. like when he looks scruffy, not pretty and effeminate.
ada-nicole kidman. not really a challenging role.
ruby-renee zelwinger. not really a challenging role either.
sara-natalie portman. bit part as mother, lonely.
plot:
i don't know how realistic it was about the civil war (1864). other than it killed a lot of men. seemed rather pointless. brutal. people were hungry. fighting scenes i didn't watch so much. but not well done by the feel - just a lot of wailing, screaming, things exploding. siege of petersburg. the real evil seemed the group who were going after deserters -- killing woman's husband before finding the boys they were harboring. i'd go mute too, even without the noose around my neck. how do you recover from that?
inmen was gone for 3+ years. seemed nearly indestructible until he came home. ada's really fertile (i'm assuming the red-haired girl in the end was theirs). but strangers before they were separated. don't mind that he died in the story, as things wouldn't be so pleasant if they actually had to deal with each other day-to-day. he was the quiet, said profound things when he did say something. she was wellbred, minister's daughter. spoke latin, played the piano. surprised the father didn't disapprove initially.
wasn't really an exciting plot - other than are they actually going to see each other. meet in the snow, after she shot the turkey.
her vision in the well - of seeing him amongst crows in the snow. came true. nice to see ada more self sufficient.
liked the woman with the goats. makes me want to grow crazy herbs and practice fun medicine (did she give him lauded?).
cold mountain, north carolina. going home. mountain that doesn't really have a name. like ruby's georgia.
soundtrack:
significant for alison kraus (i thought it was nicole kidman at first) and dirk powell who i've heard, don't know anything about. but sounded like old time banjo...

dvd: has 2 discs, but the 2nd disc is nearly useless. didn't bother watching the deleted scenes. a lot of plugs for other miramax movies.
context: watched a bit last night just to imprint some images in my mind separate fr googling the wrong people, nice conversation with pk. then turned on this am, and couldn't turn it off. can't turn down a love story. but need to go out on this windy dreary day. wonder how the tulips are doing...
