woman of the year, 1942

spencer tracy, sam spade

worldly female writer and male sports writer fall in love.
married life is mostly her carrying on as usual, with him in the background.
so much that she adopted a Greek boy without his input, and proceeded to neglect him.
he got fed up with it and left. on the night that she was getting a plaque for "woman of the year"
her aunt and father marry- success not fun if you don't have someone to share it with.
she comes running back to him, trying to do the kitchen stuff that she doesn't know how to do
they reconcile, with him not wanting things to that extreme, and her valuing their relationship more.

the big sleep, 1946

carmen

mr. mars

thriller, murder mystery. people die, but nothing gory.
detective gets hired for supposedly straightforward blackmail case. carmen is daughter of wealthy family. blackmailed by guy who ends up dead.
photo taken by grecian head at dead man's place of her. being blackmailed by person who has picture, who ends up dead.
mr. mars has casino. supposedly his wife ran off with a young guy who old man really liked.
i think what happened:
young man accidentally killed by carmen. she freaks out, mr. mars blackmails her using mrs. rutledge. to cover, he has his wife hideout, saying that she ran away with that guy.

well acted, marlowe has a dry character. a lot of chemistry betw him and bacall.

on TCM, during a bogart marathon.
watched by self mostly as @ sleeping.

dead husband, patrice
dead daughter, anna
mistress

woman, husband, daughter in car accident- they die, and she has minimal injuries.
she gets rid of most things, leaves the house, moves into another apartment.
she wants to do nothing. to not get involved with people or things, to escape any further hurt.
but life intervened.
boy who found them at the accident had her cross. told her what her husband last said.
the music that her father was composing had a life, and saved by the archivist
man who loved her (colleague of patrice) foud her, continued to be suportive, worked on the composition (for the EU, to be played simultaneously by many countries' symphonies)
prostitute in her apt building not force to move out, called her for support
story about music flashed husband's mistress- lawyer who was pregnant with his child
she was good and generous, someone people could depend on
and she was unable to shut herself off fr the world

study of grief, from the inner female psychological side
quiet, not a lot of talking
which was difficult for binoche, as she's usu more emotionally expressive
music- as she did a lot of composing for him. flute player in the street.
attention to detail, as that's what she was trying to focus on to block out the world.
